I believe that the events lead to May 2009 massacre could have been avoided. Sri Lanka Security Forces(SF) kept LTTE at bay from the Eastern seaboard to the Western Seaboard for a longtime by establishing a fortified line of defense from East to West running through Vavuniya. LTTE could not penetrate the defense line in a meaningful manner. SF would not though venture beyond that line too far. SF did not have that kind of guts to come out of that bunker line. Nine/Eleven made a sea of change of course but that did not cause the real damage. America proscribed LTTE long before 2009, during Clinton era. It took more than 10years after America proscribed LTTE for the May 2009 massacre to take place. It took about eight years after Nine/Eleven for the May 2009 massacre to occur. India, China and Pakistan helped and helped openly. However they did not man the front line. How come is then the SF which rested behind barbed wire for more than a decade took the courage to move out of the bunker to march forward? There must have been something for them to come out of it!
The final push commenced in July 2006 at Mavilaru with the sluice gate issue. SF was waiting for a chance and clinched on that Mavilaru opportunity to push forward.
The vast military complex at Mannal aru (Weli oya) is only a few miles from the fateful Mullivaykaal. However the SF at Mannal aru camp did not venture out from 2006 July till around April 2009. Almost three years, SF was hiding behind the fortified lines. LTTE cadres were on the watch along the Mannal aru camp, facing SF. SF at Mannal aru camp bombarded the LTTE cadres with artillery and multibarrel rocket launchers but LTTE did not budge for almost three years. What made LTTE cadres not to budge?
About 40000 SF were at Muhamalai, near Anaiyirravu(Ele phant Pass) for more than three years and could not make any headway! SF tried to come out twice or thrice but they were severely beaten back by LTTE cadres and SF preferred to sit tight behind the bunker lines for three years. What made the LTTE to defend the ground at Muhamalai?
Kokkillai lagoon to Chundikulam(Eas t of Elephant Pass), is about 100kilometer, and the largest Naval base in the country at Trincomale(Thir ukonamalai) is not far from Kokillai. Still the Navy could not make a beachhead along the Eastern seaboard for three years. Then what went wrong!
Pirabhakaran and Tamilnadu failed and failed miserably. I will first address the Tamil Nadu factor. Vaiko, Nedumaran, Seeman etc. spoke for us. Seeman is a late comer and I do not blame him too much. Vaiko has always been sincere with our cause. He however failed to see obvious things. He should have realized that he could not help while taking an adversarial approach towards the Tamilnadu government. It is the Tamilnadu police which caused the Eellam struggle to fizzle out. I have no issue if the Tamilnadu police stopped arms coming into Tamilnadu. Tamilnadu police need not o have stopped rice going into Eellam. This is not free of charge. It would have been paid in double. Rice were allowed to be taken to Kerala but not to Eellam. This made the Vanni folks to suffer in hunger.
What made LTTE cadres not to budge?
What made the LTTE to defend the ground at Muhamalai?
Then what went wrong?
I have raised above three questions in the previous paragraphs.
LTTE made bunkers in reinforced concrete at Mannal aru and Muhamalai as these were theatres of major operations for a longtime. Then cement and reinforcing bars were banned by the Sri Lanka government. We have no issue with it. What made Tamilnadu police to make such an effort to stop the flow cement and reinforcing bars? That was why LTTE was trying to build earth bund to defend them. If Tamilnadu police would have allowed the flow of dry food items and some construction materials, Vanni will still be fighting. This is where the Tamilnadu leaders failed. They should have made the police to throw a blind eye for food, medicine and construction materials, while being tough with arms and ammunition coming into it. I do not want to go on with it and misuse the generosity of keetru.
Pirabhakaran is a failure but I do not want to go in detail about him. Pirabhakaran failed to handle Karuna in an intelligent way. Pirabhakaran had the habit of making the second most popular person to disappear. Karuna watched that and watched it carefully. Pirabhakaran took decisions in anger. He surrounded himself with yes men. Generally two heads are better than one, but at the same time everyone cannot take decisions. He took credit for all successful missions and failures were ascribed to others. All dissent is dealt with capital punishment. Pirabhakaran allowed the Sri Lanka government to choose where they want to fight and in which way they want to approach. Interested people in Tamilnadu should hire some retired military Tamil officers to analyze the way SF went and why LTTE could not stop them. If there would have some limited supply of food and construction materials, then the story would have been different.
I am not writing this for publication, but for the Tamilnadu interested people to see the events in a practical manner.
